The Construction Timeline: What to Expect When Building an ADU

From permits to final inspection, understand the typical construction timeline and key milestones when building an accessory dwelling unit in Ithaca.

Most ADU projects in Ithaca take seven to eight months from initial consultation to move-in. Knowing the phases ahead of time helps set expectations and keep the project on track.

Week 1 is the initial consultation, where we assess your property and review preliminary options. Weeks 2–6 cover design development — custom architectural plans, 3D renderings, and finalized specifications.

Weeks 7–12 are dedicated to permitting and approvals, including submitting applications and coordinating with city officials. This stage typically takes 4–8 weeks depending on project complexity.

Pre-construction (weeks 13–14) involves finalizing contracts, ordering materials, and preparing the site. Construction itself runs roughly weeks 15–30, with regular updates and quality inspections.

The final phase (weeks 31–32) includes inspections, obtaining the certificate of occupancy, and handing over the keys. Building in buffer time for weather and permit review keeps the timeline realistic.
