Maximizing Small Spaces: Design Tips for ADUs Under 800 Square Feet

Designing a compact ADU is an exercise in intentionality. Every square foot counts, and the most successful small homes feel spacious because of smart planning, not square footage.

Start with an open-plan layout that combines kitchen, dining, and living areas. Removing interior walls makes the space feel larger and allows natural light to flow throughout. Reserve enclosed rooms for the bedroom and bathroom only.

Build in storage wherever possible — under stairs, beneath beds, above doorways, and within wall cavities. Multi-functional furniture, like a Murphy bed or a dining table that doubles as a desk, lets a single room serve several purposes.

Maximize vertical space with tall windows and high ceilings where the design allows. Light, consistent flooring and a restrained color palette visually expand the interior. Large windows and glass doors connect the ADU to the outdoors and bring in daylight.

Finally, don't overlook the exterior. A small private patio or deck effectively extends the living area into the backyard, making even the most compact ADU feel generous.
